- 1 place mat
- Fabric Cord
- Silk Flower(s)
- Tacky glue
- Hot glue gun
- Sewing machine
- Check to see if your place mat has a right side and a wrong side. (The wrong side is the side that would show a seam and doesn’t have a pattern.) With your place mat on the table vertically, and with the right side facing up, use tacky glue to attach your piece of ribbon. (Remember that the mat will be folded in half to make the bag and we will be using a couple of inches to make the flat bottom of the purse, so glue your ribbon towards the top edge, a couple of inches or so below the top of the mat.) Let dry.
- With right sides together, sew your seam on each side of the place mat. The ribbon side should now be on the inside. Trim off any extra ribbon and turn the bag right side out. The ribbon side will now be on the outside. Take your cord and measure how long you want to handle to be. (For an over-the-shoulder bag it would be 9-12 inches.) Wrap a piece of scotch tape around the cord before cutting to prevent fraying. Sew into the sides of your bag, across your seams, going back and forth several times giving the join strength. Make sure to use the same color thread as your place mat so that your sewing is invisible.
- Using hot glue, attach your silk flower, or flowers to the front of your bag on your strip of ribbon.
